How to Protect Yourself, Your family and Nation and World from Coronavirus Attack

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause respiratory illness in people. Coronaviruses circulate among animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats.

The coronavirus or Covid-19 is a large family of viruses that causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to acute respiratory syndromes, but the current virus is a novel strain not seen before. Common symptoms of the novel coronavirus strain include respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath, according to the WHO. The WHO has declared the coronavirus epidemic as a global health emergency.

Coronavirus has created a lockdown of sorts around the entire world. From countries restricting foreign travel by suspending visas or issuing warnings to celebrities and world leaders catching the virus, COVID-19 seems to be everywhere.

And a lockdown is the right approach to counter the virus.
Coronavirus is new, highly contagious, has a global reach, and vaccines to counter it are still some way ahead. This combination of factors may have a catastrophic effect on all humanity if we are not careful and very proactive in containing and treating it.

It is heartening to see so much effort being put in by the experts, medical professionals, public health officials and the government. Now health is not our expertise but there is a long term consequence we see that is not being covered in front page news as yet.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of COVID-19 infection?

Patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

How Defeat Coronavirus?

Wash your hands frequently
Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing
Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene
Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Follow advice given by your healthcare provider
tay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

How is COVID-19 Treated?
No vaccine or specific treatment for COVID-19 infection is available. Hospitals can provide supportive care for infected people.

The CDC COVID-19 Information for Healthcare Professionals webpage provides interim guidance for healthcare professionals, infection control, and home care for managing patients with known or suspected COVID-19.

Note – Protection measures for persons who are in or have recently visited (past 14 days) areas where COVID-19 is spreading.
